Are you interested in massage for the first time? You are joining a growing number of men and women who have found therapeutic massage to be a valuable addition to their health and fitness routines, and an effective complement to other health care services. Many people seek therapeutic massage as a natural means to promote healthy body functioning, and to enhance the body's own restorative powers.
The following frequently asked questions are designed to help you stay informed about massage. If you have a question and do not see the answer here, please feel free to ask me.
If it is your first appointment, please arrive about 5 minutes early to fill out a general information/health history form. Next I will ask you general questions to establish what areas you would like worked on, if there are any conditions needing to be addressed and determine if massage is appropriate for you. Ask any questions that you have about your issues or the massage at this time. I may perform certain assessments and testing to evaluate your condition, and to see if you have any presenting complaints. Massage is professional and conscientious body work for relaxation of body, mind, and soul.
To derive the highest benefits of a massage, you should be disrobed to allow me to employ techniques without the disruption which clothing causes.
Many techniques are most effective when performed directly to the body. I will leave the room while you undress, get comfortable on the massage table and cover yourself with the sheet and blanket that will be used to drape you during the massage. I will only undrape what I will be working on, otherwise you remain completely covered.
It does not matter to me what you wear during YOUR massage. I will work to give you the best massage no matter what you are wearing. You disrobe to the degree YOU decide for YOUR massage.
If is your first massage, you may be a little nervous and may want to wear some kind of swim wear or underwear. I will understand, so be comfortable and enjoy your massage wearing what you choose, if anything at all. Remember that you can wear a suit of armor if you choose to although your massage will not feel as good and the price is generally the same.
Make yourself comfortable. If I want you to adjust your position, I will either move you or will ask you to move what is needed. Otherwise, change your position anytime to make yourself more comfortable. Many people close their eyes and relax completely during a session; others prefer to talk. It's up to you. It is your massage, and whatever feels natural to you is the best way to relax. Do not hesitate to ask questions at any time.
Most people feel very relaxed. Some experience freedom from long-term aches and pains developed from tension or repetitive activity. After an initial period of feeling slowed down, people often experience increased energy, heightened awareness, and greater productivity which can last for days. Since toxins are released from your soft tissues during a massage, it is recommended you drink plenty of water following your massage. Sometimes a hot Epsom salt bath is recommended that encourages the release of toxins that may have been stirred up from the massage treatment.
The answer here depends on the reasons for receiving the massage. If a client comes for some injury relief, and to relieve chronic tightness that is interfering with their daily lives in some way, weekly sessions may be necessary for a while to build on each session's improvement in their relief and healing. For those who use massage as preventive care and managing the daily stress in their lives, once a month is normally enough. They may shorten the time between massages during stressful periods. Some come more often just because they enjoy it that much.
Pregnancy massage can give relief of muscular tension, especially in the lower back and hips, upper back, shoulders and neck, and reduce stress on weight-bearing joints. It can also provide enhanced body awareness for better posture and less discomfort. It can assist with body mechanics and movement during structural change and support of birth process by relaxing muscles involved in labor and birth. It will help ease anxiety and stress during time of transition and provide emotional support and nurturing.
